Spirituality at East Claydon
At East Claydon Church of England School, spirituality is not a single lesson, event or subject. It is the way we help children make sense of themselves, their relationships, the world around them and the bigger questions of life. Rooted in our Christian vision, spirituality is woven through every aspect of school life and helps children grow in wisdom, hope, dignity and confidence as unique individuals loved by God.
Our vision reminds us that:
“Rooted in God's love, we believe every child is a unique gift, created to flourish in a joyful environment. At East Claydon, we encourage one another and build each other up through kindness, collaboration and courage, so all may thrive and grow in wisdom, hope, and dignity, living life in all its fullness.”
Spirituality helps children understand who they are, what they value, how they relate to others and how they can contribute positively to the world. It is about developing a sense of wonder, purpose, belonging and hope. It encourages children to ask questions, reflect deeply, appreciate beauty, respond to challenge and recognise the worth and dignity of every person.

Our Spirituality Framework: WOWs, OWs and NOWs
At East Claydon we use a simple language that helps children recognise spiritual moments in everyday life.
WOW moments are those experiences of awe, wonder, joy, beauty and creativity that stop us in our tracks and make us think.
These might happen when:
- Observing nature and the changing seasons
- Listening to music
- Reading an inspiring story
- Creating artwork
- Solving a challenging problem
- Experiencing success after perseverance
WOW moments help children appreciate the beauty and richness of life and encourage curiosity about the world around them.
OW moments are experiences of challenge, difficulty, injustice, sadness or disappointment.
These might include:
- Falling out with a friend
- Experiencing loss or change
- Learning about unfairness in the world
- Making mistakes
- Facing a challenge that feels difficult
OW moments help children develop empathy, resilience, compassion and understanding. They provide opportunities to learn that growth often comes through challenge and that we can support one another through difficult times.
NOW moments are opportunities to pause, reflect and consider the deeper meaning of life.
These might involve:
- Quiet reflection
- Prayer
- Mindfulness
- Asking big questions
- Thinking deeply about experiences
- Appreciating peaceful moments
NOW moments create opportunities for children to slow down, notice their thoughts and feelings and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
What Difference Does Spirituality Make?
We want every child to leave East Claydon with a strong sense of self, an appreciation of others and confidence in their place within the wider world.
Children who develop spiritually are more likely to:
- Recognise their own worth and the worth of others
- Develop healthy and supportive relationships
- Demonstrate kindness, courage, collaboration and joy
- Appreciate beauty and wonder
- Ask meaningful questions
- Show empathy and compassion
- Develop resilience and hope
- Reflect thoughtfully on experiences
- Approach challenges positively
- Find joy in learning and discovery
Most importantly, we want our children to know that they are valued, that they belong and that they have the potential to make a positive difference in the world.
